Data and voice sharing the same network is not new! Throughout the 80s and 90s, PBX vendors attempted to successfully provision data over voice networks. These capabilities were mostly available to large enterprises and typically failed to deliver the convergence and cost savings they promised. Voice and data vendors converge these network technologies because they enable business capabilities for enterprises of all sizes. Although it is more efficient to provision voice traffic over a data network, voice traffic is more sensitive to network latency. Therefore it is imperative to properly provision a data network to support voice. WSN has deployed voice over IP networks (VoIP) since 1997 and has helped many of our clients leverage the promise of VoIP.
   
Advantages
   
IPT provides two main advantages. First, by utilizing the same network infrastructure as data traffic, IPT achieves cost savings by eliminating the need for a separate voice network both within and outside of the enterprise. Second, the use of general-purpose data server technology in IPT has opened the door to the addition of both enhanced voice features and voice-data features to business communications.
